Andrea’s musings and portrait inspiration
Portrait inspiration – where do I find it? When I am inspired, I am bouncing with enthusiasm and positivity – my friends find it is infectious and if they hang around long enough they will be roped in to collaborate. My emotional inspiration – the reason I take portraits, remains consistent and is my raison d’être – I believe that you are beautiful and amazing – YOU (yes, ordinary you) are my portrait inspiration.
I kid you not, I am deadly serious – and I hope this post will show you that it is all in the attitude we adopt. How many of us listen to our inner critic bemoaning the fact that we aren’t this or we aren’t that? I have lost count of the times I have heard friends say (and I am also guilty here) “I need to lose a stone” , “I hate my thighs” or “I look fat” but for each part of our body we dislike there is also a part we like but we just choose to talk about the negatives! WHY?
I have a friend whose grandmother is soon to reach the age of 100, when asked the secret to a long and happy life she replied…(and you really need to imagine this in a Jamaican accent with emphasis on the word moan “mo’aan” to get the full flavour).
” Me got two friends, one she die 89 and the other she die 95. you want to know why the one she 89 die?…Because she moan, moan, moan, moan moan. Me tellin’ you the secret to a long life is a positive outlook” and she should know, she is after all almost 100 and sharper than a razor – I have to agree that what you focus on and nurture will grow (think about it – what you focus on and nurture will grow).
You see, we all too often look for our imperfections and forget to notice and celebrate our beauty and successes. We pitch ourselves against supermodels and celebrities and I am sorry if I burst the bubble but – yup, even they have bad hair days! In Jane Fonda’s book, Prime Time, she shares a few home truths with the reader and admits that takes a battalion of make-up artists, hair stylists and wardrobe advisers to make her look photo ready for the oscars.
So here’s what I know: Connect with yourself, practice gratitude, and invite love into your life and you will flourish.
Break with your usual routine – spend an hour doing something different, feel the open space instead of sitting at your desk, kick up the leaves in the park. Be grateful – you have probably all heard of 365 Grateful (if you haven’t then go take a peek its a wonderful project by Hailey Bartholomew), notice the ordinary, count the blessings in your life not someone else’s. Invite love into your world – Smile and focus on the positive, find the good in a not so good situation, give to others, Shift Your Attitude Sister!. See its not so difficult, it’s all about what we choose to do.
When you next look in the mirror see a beautiful amazing woman, if you don’t see her look again because you have missed something. Like the song says…Girl You’re Amazing Just The Way You Are.
